He simply touches on descriptions, and I still have ‘memories’ of ib there’.
I was hoping he would end up with Io; i felt like he abandoned her at the end and she was so in love with him. Beautifully written, with an intriguing premise and an interesting “unreliable” narrator. Want to add to the discussion?

Latro in the Mist: Latro in the Mist combines two books—Soldier in the Mist and Soldier of Arete—both wonderful reads about an injured soldier named Latro who suddenly finds himself without the use of his short term memory, but blessed with the ability to communicate with gods. Popular covers see all 5 covers. The very ending of the second book was rather confusing, though — the POV shifted to that of another character who is apparently overfond of metaphors and poetic language, and I’m still trying to sort out what actually happened.

There are also parts of the novel when Latro is imprisoned and the scroll is taken away from him, so for those periods there are no entries and we only learn of the events retrospectively when Latro recovers the scroll.

It has multiple layers of understanding of the events, and is incredibly well worked and faultless. The narrative conceit an amnesiac soldier keeps a journal latr order to remember what happens to him is cool in theory, but frustrating in practice. I feel comfortable writing bad things about a beloved literary hero of mine because a he will never, ever read this and b Wolfe is of that class of writer who deserves to be discussed not simply with enthusiasm but with serious, studious contemplation, contemplation which may led to criticism.
He’s such and exquisite and careful writer, but with the ability to enrapture you in his books so that the basic pleasures of reading are never lost beneath his considerable efforts as a writer.
The fluid politics of city-states; the life of soldiers, commoners, and aristocrats; and the sense of wonder and amazement in world where mythical creatures and powerful gods are real all paint a misst where magic is real and anything can happen.

The strange use of names is in particular fascinating, as Latro translates the Greek place-names he hears into their literal meanings, and hte the reader is left trying to figure out where “Rope” is, and what’s the difference between “Hill” and “Tower Hill.

No person should ever feel threatened, harassed, or unwelcome. This makes for a style of writing that is weirdly simultaneously unpolished and beautiful in its simplicity. Interact with the community in good faith. So each night before he sleeps he writes down the events of the day, and each morning reads the scroll to teh what little he and his companions have pieced together.

Gene Wolfe is an amazing fantasy author, very unique and literary in his style. It took me most of the first book to even figure ih that the “Rope-Makers” were Spartans, at which point things began to fall into place. Do not make readers follow the link to read the full content.

But often it lafro off as over coy, his refusal to describe any character in useful detail, or shoving a critical but not particularly clever clue into a dull front half of a paragraph. The major theme of the work is memory as the novels are epistolary, each book being one scroll of the daily notes Latro made in order to be able to be aware of the past by reading each day.
Yet with the ending of the book lays a question on if both freedom and memory can be on and given, or if they must be taken on one’s own terms.
Gene Wolfe is wonderful. These are gods that are far more archetype laden.

You thought you did until you witness Latro and company drifting to places called “Rope” and “Thought” and “Dolphin”. A defeated mercenary of the enemy, he is made a slave and frequently shifted from owner to owner. It is funny, interesting and full of action.
