The frightened humans realized they did not have a clue where they were in space. And that’s the most effective way to lose an audience. Yes, the old ladies are awesome, the Atevi female characters are even more awesome, but when it comes to the young cherdyh characters I also learned more about herd mentality from this book than I did from any other source, and she made it truly exciting. In reality, we all act with incomplete knowledge, we all strive for foreginer things, try to make things happen, and sometimes succeed and sometimes fail—but demanding this extra bit foreignner agency erases the agency that most people actually have.

What I liked 1. Cherryh’s eponymous series, Foreigner begins an epic tale of the survivors of a lost spacecraft who crash-land on a planet inhabited by a hostile, sentient alien race.
Unlike his predecessors, he is far more open-minded and ambitious to build better relationship between the two races, which could lead to major shifts in power in Atevi society. They somehow end up lost and the only place they can reach to refuel is a planet already inhabited by an alien civilisation – the Atevi – so they set up a mini colony there.
Nail biting adventure convoluted political intrigue ensues. The way they perceive relationships and loyalty is entirely different. The insecurity of Bren’s position leaves him constantly dithering and his perspective grows tiresome, too introspective.
Back to the ending and what I think most people don’t know about this book: One files a document of Intent which liberates the target to file one back. If you’re looking for a light, jolly book with juicy romance and predictable foreiner — look elsewhere, I’m afraid.
