Alice and Dan chat, have sex and fall in love. Titled with the utmost irony, Closer should really be called Further Away. I just felt like I was watching a cast of boring insufferables doing what boring insufferables will do: Larry sees Anna at the Aquarium and thinks she’s the internet chat girl. Larry, a dermatologist, “meets” Dan in an internet chat room.
There are frequent pauses, but not of the Pinteresque variety—more like skipped heartbeats Twelve scenes chronicle the love affairs, rivalries, seductions, and betrayals of four characters two men, two women in a spare, intense style — sometimes coarse, sometimes obscene, but calling for real sensitivity and vulnerability in the acting.
Closer talks a lot, but it doesn’t actually say anything. Jarber catches on and explains that it was probably Dan playing a practical joke on him. They’re all selfish, deceitful, conniving, and use sex to both enrich and destroy their lives. Set in a restaurant and based around a game of poker and partly inspired by his own experiences with gambling addictionit opened at the National Theatre in Februaryand won the Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy.

Watching 4 narcissistic characters be horrible to each other may invoke some higher meaning for others, but cloeer me, I can watch the world news to similar effect.
A comparable angst is visible in the other two actors in an expertly balanced quartet. This is an awesome piece of drama.

I definitely need to check out some more of Marber’s plays. I was surprised at the very different ‘ending’ but some of the clunky transitions in the film now jarber sense. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. Instead we all got this simultaneous break: It is a strange category for the striking, vicious play to be even considered for.
