I figure it works like this: So that is where I am at in my Japanese learning. I chhkyu my post was long. I used Chuukyuu e ikou several years ago. I am self-studying Japanese.

In addition, the book is really thin. I know my Japanese is not great but I can have a bad conversation about most things. Does it have answers in the back? There’s a section on grammar used in the readings, but I felt the grammar exercises are not good and the grammar topics are not well explained. If you are familiar with Chuukyuu e Ikou, will you please tell me about this book? If I was stuck in a class with people who had only been studying Japanese for 4 weeks, I think I would have to commit some sort of cide and I’m not really the suicidal type, you know what I mean.

A lot of people use JLPT prep materials – not perfect, but there are heaps of books for the test. If you need Japanese grammar reference, check out Tae Kim’s website, or Jgram.

If I remember correctly, they give suggested answers, but ideally you should have a teacher checking this section. Their Beginner students only have class for 1.

So I really need the books to have answers in them so I can check myself. If you think books are too expensive, check out sites like smart. Well, the hell if I am going to pay my hard earned money to be treated like just another twinkie on the assembly line.

What does the first chapter cover? And it isn’t like I only know that many words. It’s definitely not an elementary coursebook.


Chuukyuu e Ikou

Most people cobble together a method by finding a good book for reading, for listening, for vocabulary, etc If I remember correctly, there are 10 chapters, each one based around an article.

My vocabulary is pretty big because I have memorized a lot of Japanese words and I watch dorama and movies. I love how when I first started learning Japanese I was taught to use ‘anata’ a lot and then later realized that the Japanese avoid this word in sentences as much as they can unless they are speaking to their husband.

Are you seriously telling me that after 4 weeks of studying Japanese, their students are anywhere near my level?

JapanesePod is not perfect, but the basic content d free, and at the very least the lessons are professionally constructed. There’s a J-E glossary so the articles aren’t too difficult to understand, and iiou CD has two recordings of the article – one at normal and one at reduced speed. I need a book that will help me with my weak grammar areas without boring me to death with remedial vocabulary and sentences.

Would it be good for self-studying? I am not afraid to have a conversation in Japanese. Methinks their placement tests need some work. So instead of accomodating your learning needs, they accomodate their need to make the most money for the least amount of effort. They use a very generic and inflexible formula for teaching.

I believe there are answers to some of the exercises, but I believe they also have a section where you’re encouraged to use your own answers. I figure that the only affordable alternative right now is to self-study and if I have any extra money, spend my money traveling in Japan instead of on worthless classes.

What do you think of this book? Caustic advice is also welcome. They said I was a Beginner I have been to Japan but not recently. The easier approach, just stick them all back in beginner Japanese with a bunch of students who have zero or minimal speaking, listening or reading or grammar skills. I thought of taking a class there but they want to put me in with their early beginners which is such a joke.


I guesstimate that I know 5, or more Japanese words. Her English was great but she was nice and let me practice. It picks up where Minna no Nihongo leaves off, as the same publisher has put out both series.

Addressing each of their learning needs would be time consuming and difficult and also the teacher would have to identify exactly what their specific weaknesses are and match them with a similar group of people who are all working on the same weakness. And if you are missing one grammar point out of 20, then instead of just fixing the one area and letting you advance, they want to start you back at square one because it is easier for them. Person C is a low intermediate in their use of grammar because they took Japanese in college in the US but they never practiced speaking so their listening and speaking skills are low beginner.

Search in titles only Search in Learning Japanese only Search. But this approach is technical and complicated.
