It is not “true,” canonic-type imitation, but rather sort of a relaying of melodic material from the first oboe to the second. Albinoni’s oboe concertos may not have been the very first of their kind to be written—Vivaldi could have beaten him to it by a short head—but they are among the most delightful. This is especially effective in the gorgeous, minor-key Adagio movement, where the process of imitation results in tasty harmonic clashes between the two oboes.
These concertos attracted many performers, particularly amateur ones, as the technical demands were not excessive, and the abundance of fantasy and felicitous melodic inspiration made them highly attractive pieces for performer and listener alike.
